Thailand: gunmen kill 11 in mosque attack

At least 11 were killed and 18 others wounded when gunmen opened fire on a mosque in Joh-i-Rong district of southern Thailand’s Narathiwat province during evening prayers June 8. A few minutes after the mosque attack, a car bomb exploded in the same area, killing a villager and wounding 19 others. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

The attack is as one of the most lethal since a separatist insurgency was launched in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala in early 2004. More than 3,700 have been killed since the insurgency began.

The population of the three southern provinces is mostly Muslim. Thai Muslims have in recent years petitioned for more social welfare as well as equal educational, healthcare and economic facilities with the Buddhist population of the country. (Press TV, Iran, June 9)
