WHY WE FIGHT

From the New York Post, March 12:

Car Kills Woman on Birthday
A Queens woman was struck and killed by a car on her 71st birthday yesterday as she crossed an Upper East Side street on her way to celebrate with her daughter and granddaughter.

Ariela Koenigsberg was hit at Third Avenue near East 84th Street at 1:15 p.m.

Daughter Joanne Stahl, 41, knew something was wrong when her mom, an Israeli air force vet who was always on time, failed to arrive by 1.

“I walked outside and I saw that there was an accident,” she said. “I kept calling her, my mother, and still she didn’t pick up. I asked people, I said, ‘What happened?’

“Someone told me that a woman was hit and I saw the blood on the ground. I’m calling my mother again, and a cop picks up and he tells me.”

The driver stopped and was not charged.

“I just want my granddaughter to be part of my birthday,” Koenigsberg had told Stahl a few hours earlier.

The accident scene was strewn with new clothing for 1-year-old Jillian, a witness said.

Cops said the victim had been jaywalking, but Stahl insisted her mom would not do that.

AM New York, March 12:

Police seek suspect in fatal hit and run
Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the driver of a car that struck a pedestrian in Coney Island and then sped away early Sunday.

The incident happened at 1:45 a.m. at the intersection of West 31st Street and Surf Avenue, police said.

The victim, a 47-year-old man who was not immediately identified, was crossing south on Surf Avenue when he was struck by a westbound black Lincoln Towncar, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at Lutheran Medical Center, police said.

It was unclear if there were lights at the intersection, but witnesses told investigators that the Towncar never stopped after the impact, police said.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is urged to call police at 800-577-TIPS. All calls are confidential.
