Obama’s biggest foreign policy challenge: our readers write

Our March issue featured stories on new challenges to the Pentagon’s Afghanistan operation, fears of Mexico’s imminent destabilization, and NAFTA’s hidden military agenda. Our multiple-choice March Exit Poll was: Which will be Obama’s biggest foreign policy challenge? We received 17 votes (which we hope does not indicate that we have only 17 readers). The results follow:

Afghanistan in 2009 starts looking like Iraq in 2007 —or worse: 35% (6 votes)
Pakistan destabilized, Taliban get the nuke: 0% (0 votes)
Iraq in 2009 starts looking like Iraq in 2007 again —or worse: 0% (0 votes)
North Korea collapses, hundreds of thousands of refugees overrun DMZ: 6% (1 vote)
Mexico collapses, hundreds of thousands of refugees overrun border wall: 24% (4 votes)
Mumbai terror attack brings on Indo-Pakistani war (with nuclear-armed Taliban): 6% (1 vote)
Temple Mount terror attack brings on the End Times: 0% (0 votes)
All of the above: 29% (5 votes)

So the winner is: Afghanistan in 2009 starts looking like Iraq in 2007 —or worse.

Only one reader, JG in New York City, offered commentary. He writes:

You didn’t have ‘none of the above’ so I couldn’t use the page.

Obama’s biggest foreign policy challenge will be the continuing collapse of the US financial system and the world beginning to restructure itself away from our banks. The Chinese holding lots of US currency will manifest in someway. The standard of living in the US will start falling faster.

As for the rest of your science fiction:

* Afghanistan in 2009 starts looking like Iraq in 2007 —or worse.

Isn’t it already as bad? Obama will continue to muddle through. Karzai ‘wins’ upcoming election but not the one after that. If I’m picking from this list ‘Obama’s war’ is his biggest problem.

* Pakistan destabilized, Taliban get the nuke.

Pakistan destabilized slightly, Taliban don’t get the nuke.

* Iraq in 2009 starts looking like Iraq in 2007 again —or worse.

Big uptick in violence / civil war but US is out in two years except some bases.

* North Korea collapses, hundreds of thousands of refugees overrun DMZ.

Kim dies and Korea reunifies.

* Mexico collapses, hundreds of thousands of refugees overrun border wall.

Soldiers returning from Iraq get a Mexican ‘vacation’. Noise starts to be made about decriminalizing pot. Bigger problems domestically with right wing hate groups blaming illegals for their unemployment.

* Mumbai terror attack brings on Indo-Pakistani war (with nuclear-armed Taliban).

No South Asian war, no nuclear-armed Taliban.

* Temple Mount terror attack brings on the End Times.

Hamas and Fatah make up for a while and then there’s another Palestinian civil war. End times delayed.
