Pakistan is failing to control the Lashkar-e-Taiba group in the disputed territory of Kashmir and between 40 and 50 terrorist camps are operational in the region, Indian army chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor said March 25, the same day the army reported it had killed 17 militants in Indian-administered Kashmir. “Lashkar is very much still active,” Kapoor told India’s state broadcaster Doordarshan. The Indian army said it had killed the 17 militants in a five-day battle in a forested area of the Handwara district near the Line of Control. Eight soldiers also died in the fighting. Brig. Gen. Gurmeet Singh told reporters the militants were members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group India says was responsible for the November attacks in Mumbai. A Lashkar spokesman told Reuters that India should prepare for more violence in the coming days. (NYT, March 26)
