Amnesty International accuses Israel of genocide

In a landmark 300-page report, Amnesty International has accused Israeli authorities of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The report outlines three specific violations of the Genocide Convention: the killing of Palestinians, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting conditions intended to bring about their physical destruction. This assertion comes after a thorough investigation involving interviews with over 200 individuals, satellite imagery analysis, and a review of public statements by Israeli officials. The report highlights the severe impact of Israelā€™s actions, with over 42,000 Palestinians, including 13,300 children, killed, and 97,000 injured. Entire neighborhoods have been leveled, and crucial infrastructure obliterated, leaving significant parts of Gaza uninhabitable. The humanitarian toll is severe, with civilians enduring desperate conditions, such as lack of clean water and constant bombing. (Photo:Ā Mohammed Zaanoun/TNH)

Annexation agenda escalates West Bank conflict

TheĀ Israel Defense Forces killed four Palestinians in an air-strikeĀ on the village of Siir, in Jenindistrict of the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that Israeli forces “prevented our teams from reaching the bombing site,” declaring it a “closed military zone.” Two days later, an IDF drone strike near the village of Aqaba in the Jordan Valley left two dead. The IDF again reportedly prevented ambulances from reaching the site. Two days after that, fire-fights erupted in Jenin as Palestinian Authority security forces responded to the theft of military equipment. A PA statement said “a group of outlaws opened fire on the headquarters of the security services” and stole two vehicles. Despite the designation of “outlaws,” the vehicles were reportedly paraded through the streets by a band flying the flags of Islamic Jihad and Hamas. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has meanwhile introduced legislation to bar use of the term “West Bank” by the US government in favor of the official Israeli designation “Judea & Samaria.” (Photo: delayed gratification via New Jewish Resistance)

Abandon Harris

Vote for ‘Killer Kamala.’ It’s important.

With UN aid agencies and humanitarian organizations warning of an “apocalyptic” scenario in North Gaza, the Biden administration faces a lawsuit charging complicity with genocide. The “pause” that the White House has imposed on some arms shipments to Israel by no means absolves the administration of moral (or legal) culpability. However, it may have had the effect of restraining Benjamin Netanyahu’s maximalist plans to cleanse the Gaza Strip of Palestinians altogether. President Trump meanwhile recognized Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights, recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and launched the “Abraham Accords“ā€”predicated on betrayal of the Palestinians by the Arab leadership. His 2019 executive order officially embraced the propagandistic conflation of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, and he now calls for complete repression (including by the military) of Palestine solidarity protests. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law who was his Middle East pointman, is now openly backing the cleansing of Gaza of all Palestinians, while his ultra-Zionist former ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, is an open advocate of Israeli annexation of the West Bank and destruction of al-Aqsa Mosque. As Trump accuses Biden of “holding back” Israel, it is clear that Netanyahu and his most hardline cabinet members like Itamar Ben-Gvirare openly rooting for himā€”as is the Israel Lobby in DC. In Episode 250 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg urges that the Abandon Harris campaign, however laudable its professed aims, can at this point only abet a Trump victory and is therefore inimical to Palestinian survival. Marwan Barghouti beaten in Israeli prison: report

The Commission of Detainees & Ex-Detainee Affairs, a Palestinian prisoner rights organization, reported that Israeli prison staff brutally assaulted Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian political leader and member of the Central Committee of Fatah. During a visit to Megiddo prison, Barghouti’s lawyer learned of the apparent assault, which took place Sept. 9 in a solitary confinement cell. The attack led to injuries to his head, ribs, and arms, resulting in bleeding from his ear and severe pain in his upper body. The report says that Barghouti has struggled with motor function and suffered ear infections due to being denied medical assistance. In the past year, Barghouti had already been assaulted twice. He has been held in solitary confinement since the start of the Gaza war. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)

UN: Israeli attacks on medical facilities are war crimes

A UN report documented Israeli attacks on healthcare facilities and medical personnel in the Gaza Strip in violation of international human rights law, calling the attacks war crimes and crimes against humanity. Citing the World Health Organization, the report states that between October 7, 2023 and July 30, 2024, Israel engaged in “498 attacks on health care facilities in the Gaza Strip,” with 747 people killed, 969 injured, and 110 facilities affected. The reportā€”written by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israelā€”also condemned Israeli treatment of detainees, citing instances of abuse, torture, sexual assault, and arbitrary detention. Report finds Israeli criminal interference with ICC investigation

A joint media report has led Dutch prosecutors to consider a criminal case concerning claims that Israeli intelligence officials have interfered with the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into alleged crimes in occupied Palestine. The Guardian newspaper and the Israeli publications +972 Magazine and Local Call jointly investigated what they allege are nine years of illegal surveillance and intimidation of the ICC prosecutor’s office since a preliminary inquiry was opened into the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in 2015. Twenty complainants, predominantly Palestinians, have filed a criminal complaint requesting the Dutch prosecution service investigate the allegations of interference.Ā The complainants’ lawyers said in the filing that “Israel’s many attempts to influence, sabotage and stop the investigation constitute a direct violation of their [the clients’] right to justice.” (Photo: OSeveno/WikiMedia)

Iran cites international law in attack on Israel

Iran launched scores of ballistic missiles into Israeli territory, in what it described as an exercise of its “legitimate right to self-defense under the UN Charter.” In a statement, Iranā€™s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the attacks aimed to avenge the deaths of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC general Abbas Nilforoushan. Gen. Nilforoushan was apparently killed in the same strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs in which Nasrallah was slain.Ā The Iranian attacks came hours after Israel announceda ground incursion into Lebanon, and as UN experts warned of the dire consequences of regional hostilities.Ā (Image: Pixabay)

Israel’s new West Bank operation assailed by UN

UN Secretary-General AntĆ³nio Guterres called for an “immediate cessation” of Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank, saying that the latest “dangerous developments” are “fuelling an already explosive situation” there. The appeal came one day into Israel’s new “counter-terrorism operation,” the largest in the West Bank since the Second Intifada, with hundreds of troops raiding the city of Jenin and other areas of the territory. At least 14 Palestinians have been killed in the raids, either by air-strikes or gun battles on the ground. In the dark hours of the night, Israeli bulldozers moved into Tulkarm, tearing up roads, followed by an armored convoy. Air-strikes were also carried out on targets in the town of Tubas. The total now killed on the West Bank since Oct. 7 stands at over 640. (Photo: JVP)

Settler pogrom in West Bank village

Dozens of Israeli settlers, many of them masked, attacked the Palestinian village of Jit, outside the West Bank town of Nablus, hurling stones and Molotov cocktails. The group of over 100 assailants put at least four houses and six vehicles to the torch, and apparently killed one resident. The Palestinian Authority health ministry said Rashid Sedda, 22, was killed by gunfire from the settlers and another resident was seriously wounded in what it called an act of “organized state terrorism.” (Photo: Wikipedia)

Regional war looms closer after Golan rocket strike

Israeli warplanes hit several targets in southern Lebanon, as diplomats worked frantically to prevent a regional war after a rocket strike that killed 12 youths in the Golan Heights. Israel is blaming Hezbollah for the rocket, which struck a football field in the Druze village of Majdal Shams. Hezbollah has denied responsibility, asserting that a projectile from Israel’s own Iron Dome missile defense system hit the village amid strikes on military targets elsewhere in the area by the Iran-backed Lebanese armed organization. Israel and Hezbollah have been trading strikes over the Lebanese border since Oct. 8, a day after the start of the war in Gaza. Israel has killed 527 people in Lebanon since then, according to an AFP tally, including at least 104 civilians.Ā Israel says 23 of its civilians and 17 soldiers have been killed by Hezbollah rocket-fire over this period.Ā (Image: Pixabay)

Fatah and Hamas sign unity declaration in Beijing

Meeting in the Chinese capital, senior leaders from Fatah and Hamas as well as 12 other Palestinian factions signed a joint statement, the “Beijing Declaration to End the Division & Strengthen Palestinian National Unity,” calling for establishment of an “interim government of national reconciliation” with a focus on post-conflict reconstruction of Gaza. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the event as an “historic moment for the cause of Palestine’s liberation.ā€ Asserting that “‘Palestinians governing Palestine’ is the basic principle for the post-conflict governance of Gaza,” Wang called for an international peace conference to advance a two-state solution. Israel quickly rejected the agreement, with Foreign Minister Israel Katz saying that Hamas’ rule in Gaza “will be crushed.” (Photo: PRC MFA)

ICJ: Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory illegal

The International Court of JusticeĀ ruledĀ that Israel’s occupation andĀ settlement of Palestinian territory breach international law. The decision came after the UN General Assembly requested an advisory opinion from the body on Israel’s practices in the occupied territories. The ruling held that Israel’s practices violate a number of international agreements including the Hague Convention of 1907, the Fourth Geneva Convention, the International Covenant on Civil & Political Rights, and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
