WHY WE FIGHT

From the NY Daily News, Sept. 8:

S.I. driver busted after opening car door and knocking cyclist into path of bus in fatal accident
A Staten Island woman was busted for unlicensed operation of a vehicle after a freak accident that claimed the life of a young bicyclist in Brooklyn, police said Sunday.

Krystal Francis, 24, parked her car along Atlantic Ave. Saturday night and opened her door to get out just as a 23-year-old bicyclist was passing by.

The cyclist slammed into the car door and was knocked into the path of an oncoming B45 bus, which ran her over, killing her.

“Her head was under the tire …” a stunned witness told the Daily News after the 8:30 p.m. accident in Prospect Heights. “It was devastating.”

Police officials would not immediately identify the bicyclist, who is from out of state.

Francis, who could not be reached for comment, and the bus driver were given a Breathalyzer test at the scene to determine if they were intoxicated. Both passed, police sources said.

“Freak” accident? The only thing freakish about this is that the motorist was actually charged. FoxNY identifies the victim as Jasmine Herron, 24, of Brooklyn (not “out of state”). And adds this:

The Associated Press reported that the woman who opened the parked door called 911 after she realized what had happened but then went back to the party she had been attending.

Police then tracked down Krystal Francis, 23, of Staten Island, and arrested her on charges of aggravated unlicensed driving.

So you just killed some hapless bicyclist, Krystal? Why let that spoil the party?
