The slaying of left-wing journalist and newspaper publisher Gauri Lankesh in south India's Karnataka state has sparked protests across India and outrage across the world. She had been an outspoken opponent of the ruling Hindu nationalists. Journalists are hoping the case represents a turning point in the atmosphere of impunity. In a special for CounterVortex, journalist Nava Thakuria in northeast India reports on a similar case in the region's Tripura state—where reporter Shantanu Bhowmik was beaten to death while covering a protest. The twin cases of Lankesh and Bhowmik indicate that this is a problem across India, across both geographical regions and political lines.
