Car Plows into D.C. Street Festival, Injuring 35
WASHINGTON – A woman plowed her car through several blocks at a crowded street festival in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night, injuring 35 people, police said.

Seven people suffered major injuries, including two children under the age of 3, an official said. The victims included two police officers who chased the car on motorcycles.

One witness told Washington’s WUSA-TV that the car “looked like a bolt of lightning” as it tore through the festival at about 8 p.m.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the driver, a 30-year-old resident of Oxon Hill, Maryland, was charged with aggravated assault while armed and that more charges were pending.

The driver, who had a child about 7 or 8 years old in the car with her, was among those taken to a hospital and was in good condition with no serious injuries.

Lanier said the woman was believed to have been involved in an earlier hit-and-run incident with a police car, and that it remained unclear why she drove into the festival crowd.

Several streets had been closed off for the 25th Unifest festival and parade, a celebration of black history and culture in Washington’s Anacostia neighborhood.

Lanier said the driver made a loop of several blocks through the crowd before being stopped.
