Bolivian Aymara protesters hold a public vigil and hunger strike outside the office of the National Council of Markas and Ayllus of Qullasuyu (CONAMAQ) in La Paz after it was sealed off by riot police Dec. 11. CONAMAQ followers later blocked the highway between La Paz and Oruro to demand that the office be returned to them. The dispute arises in a split in the organization that the original CONAMAQ leaders say has been fomented by the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), in order to reduce the group to an arm of the state apparatus.
