(Photo: RJA1988 via Jurist)]]> A group of UN experts warned March 6 that the genocide in Gaza is spilling into the West Bank as a wider war engulfs the region. The experts charged that Israeli policy is designed to coerce Palestinians to leave in both territories. The report also covered occupied East Jerusalem, where between 2021 and 2025 there have been at least 11,555 arrests amid claims of arbitrary detention, 2,386 deportation orders, and 1,732 home demolitions.

The experts also noted Israel’s restriction of Palestinians’ ability to participate in religious life, especially during the current holy month of Ramadan. In 2025, there were 73,871 settler incursions into al-Aqsa mosque compound. Additionally, al-Aqsa mosque has been closed to practitioners following the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

The group of experts, including Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, stated:

Under the cover of an existential war against the Palestinians, Israel is accelerating measures that alter Jerusalem’s demographic composition, religious character and legal status, destroying the remnants of the pluralistic fabric that Jerusalem has represented for centuries, for Muslims, Christians and Jews… What is being done to this world symbol of spiritual coexistence and shared heritage is irreversible.

The statement warned of a “de-Palestinisation” of Jerusalem.

Urging immediate international action, the statement called on all states to refrain from “recognizing or aiding” the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories. In July 2024, the International Court of Justice ruled in an advisory opinion that the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is unlawful. In the opinion, the court stated that Israel must “cease immediately all new settlement activities, and…evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

Earlier this month, Amnesty International warned that Israeli authorities have intentionally implemented policies aimed at dispossessing Palestinians in the West Bank, rendering the occupied territory’s annexation “irreversible.” The United Nations Human Rights Council in a new report also found that Israeli policy and settler violence in the West Bank are aimed at uprooting Palestinian communities.

The experts who drafted the warning are Francesca Albanese, Ben Saul, Ashwini K.P., Gina Romero, George Katrougalos, Tlaleng Mofokeng, Michael Fakhri and Surya Deva. The eight are members of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. The Special Procedures constitute the largest body of independent experts in the UN human rights system. The experts are independent and work on a voluntary basis, not receiving a salary for their work.

The UN nonetheless adopted a Security Council resolution in November giving its blessing to the board’s creation—a vote some member states may now regret. The board was officially inaugurated in a Jan. 22 ceremony in Davos, Switzerland, where Trump was attending the World Economic Forum. But Gaza seems almost incidental to its true mission, which appears to be creating a global strongmen’s club—led by Trump, potentially for life—to rival, if not replace, the UN itself.

With many European countries hesitant to join, whether it will get off the ground remains to be seen. But the White House has also announced the Palestinian committee that is supposed to govern Gaza under the board’s supervision. The overall imperial bent of the Board of Peace and its troubling composition seem to confirm fears that Trump’s “peace plan” is leading nowhere good. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted an invitation to join the board. Not only is he wanted on war crimes charges by the International Criminal Court, but this means he is now pencilled in to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, a territory where many accuse him of directing a genocide.

According to reports in the Israeli media, several ministers said Netanyahu used the term “occupation of the Strip” in private conversations describing his plan. One anonymous official was quoted as saying: “The die is cast—we are going for a full occupation of the Gaza Strip.” Referring to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who is said to oppose such plans, the official added: “If the chief of staff doesn’t agree, he should resign.” (ToI)

These reports come as more than a dozen former senior Israeli security officials issued a joint video message with a call to end the war in Gaza, arguing that it has become damaging to Israel’s own national interests. The message was accompanied by an open letter to US President Donald Trump calling upon him to pressure Netanyahu to instate a ceasefire. The figures include former prime minister and IDF chief Ehud Barak; former IDF chiefs of staff Moshe Ya’alon and Dan Halutz; former Shin Bet directors Nadav Argaman, Yoram Cohen, Ami Ayalon, Yaakov Peri and Carmi Gillon; former Mossad chiefs Tamir Pardo, Efraim Halevy and Danny Yatom; and former Israel Police commissioners Dudi Cohen, Moshe Karadi, Rafi Peled and Assaf Hefetz. This also comes amid a deepening of the ongoing political crisis in Israel, with the cabinet voting unanimously Aug. 4 to dismiss Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara from office, following her pursuance of corruption invesitgations into Netanyahu’s government. Her removal was immediately frozen by the High Court until the justices can rule on its legality. In a statement after the vote, Baharav-Miara called her dismissal “unlawful.” (ToI)

The day before the order to remove her, thousands of people gathered outside Baharav-Miara’s home in a show of support, protesting what they called the “illegal attempt to remove her by those seeking to dismantle Israeli democracy.” (JP)

Meanwhile, daily carnage and growing hunger continue in the Strip. There is outrage in Israel as videos were released by Hamas and Palestinian Islaic Jihad showing two of the hostages appearing dangerously emaciated. But Hamas denied that it intentionally starves prisoners, saying hostages eat what their fighters and people eat amid a hunger crisis in Gaza. (BBC News, NewsHour)

At least 87 Palestinians—including 52 people seeking aid—were killed and 644 others injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza in the past 24 hours, the enclave’s health ministry said Aug. 5. (MEE) The United Nations says more than 1,300 people have been killed trying to obtain aid supplies in the enclave since the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began operating in May, most of them shot by Israeli forces operating near GHF sites. (ToI)

At least 27 were reportedly killed by Israeli forces while trying to get food, and six others died from starvation or malnutrition in Gaza, on Aug. 3. That same day, Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, led a group of some 1,200 Israeli Jews in prayers at the al-Aqsa mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, which was protested by the Palestinian Authority as a “dangerous escalation.” The group gathered at the compound under the protection of the Israeli military. Ben-Gvir is a leading advocate of “transfer” of the entire Palestinian population from Gaza. Druing his al-Aqsa visit, he openly called on Israel to “fully occupy” and “declare full sovereignty” over the Gaza Strip. (DW)

Such extremist rhetoric of course loans credence to claims of Israel’s genocidal intent in Gaza.

The president of Ireland has now broached United Nations military intervention to save lives in Gaza. President Michael Higgins called on the UN to invoke Chapter 7 of its charter to deploy troops into the war zone to secure relief corridors. (RTÉ News)

Defense Minister Israel Katz said that building the settlements was “a strategic move that prevents the establishment of a Palestinian state that would endanger Israel.” The announcement comes amid expanding Israeli military operations and settler violence on the West Bank, and open calls from Israeli officials—including cabinet members such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich—to annex the territory. (TNH, ToI, Reuters)

Three days before the announcement, right-wing Israelis marched through Jerusalem’s Old City, chanting “Death to Arabs,” “Your home will be ours,” and “May your village burn”—with some assaulting Palestinian residents. Crowds of Israeli ultra-nationalists were bussed in for the “Jerusalem Day” march, which commemorates the occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem after the 1967 war. One group of marchers stormed an UNRWA compound—including Yulia Malinovsky, one of the Knesset members behind a law banning the agency’s activities from areas under Israeli jurisdiction.

Another group, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, pushed into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, where one Knesset member, Yitzhak Kroizer, was seen praying—in defiance of protocols of Israel’s agreement with the Islamic trust that controls the compound

Opposition leader Yair Lapid said the annual Jerusalem Day event has become a festival of “hatred and racism,” adding it was “a disgrace and an insult to Judaism.” (Al Jazeera, France24, BBC News, AP)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu marked the day with a cabinet meeting in the City of David archeological site, where he pledged: “We will keep Jerusalem united, whole, and under Israeli sovereignty. Jerusalem, our eternal capital, was reunited 58 years ago in the Six-Day War. It will never be divided again… There is no Zionism without Zion, and no Israel without Jerusalem.” (JNS, MEE)

As Trump accuses Biden of "holding back" Israel, it is clear that Netanyahu and his most hardline cabinet members like Itamar Ben-Gvirare openly rooting for him—as is the Israel Lobby in DC.
