Standing up for Gaza in New York City

Banner dropped from Manhattan Bridge during Aug. 20 march for Gaza reads: "Gaza in Our Hearts; Boycott, Divest, Sanction Israel." New York is a tough town to be a pro-Palestinian dissident in. The Zionist establishment is so hegemonic in Gotham that the "progressive" Mayor Bill de Blasio calls support for Israel part of his "job description." Compounding the obstacles to dissent is the fact that much of the protest against Israel's Gaza bombardment has been dominated by reactionary sectarian groups that support Bashar Assad's mass murder in Syria—as they similarly supported the Bosnian Serbs in their genocide against Muslims 20 years ago. Longtime New York City activist Bill Weinberg explores the dilemma.
